Hats off to our volunteers

It’s always incredibly difficult to pick our Volunteer Team of the Year during Volunteers’ week. How do you choose between all the incredibly devoted people who give up their time week after week, year after year, to ensure our charity shops stay open and running smoothly, when all we can offer them in return is a heartfelt thank you and an endless supply of chocolate biscuits? P1070085 This year was no exception but after being forced to make a decision it was a pleasure to head up the M90 this morning to Broughty Ferry to celebrate the amazing contribution of their volunteer team over the past year. The 11 person (and 1 dog) team range in age from 19 – 75, (excluding dog years!) they give over 50 hours a week and are a close knit bunch who really look out for each other.

P1070078Barbara and Donna, the Shop Manager and Assistant Manager, are an amazing dedicated pair and it’s obvious they have created a real camaraderie in the shop. We’ve got volunteers who are new to the team like Ellyn, who in her first week helped the team raise over £1,000 in a collection in Dundee. We’ve got our stalwarts Rosemary and Helen who have been with us from the opening of the shop nearly 12 years ago whose commitment to the shop is just fantastic. We have two volunteers who started as college placements and enjoyed it so much they have stayed on and fit in volunteering around their coursework and other work commitments. We have three volunteers who have additional support needs and their contribution is invaluable to smooth running of the shop. And we have a four legged volunteer who dragged her owner up and down 10 Munros in 1 day raising over £1,000 for the charity in the process.

P1070076We have volunteers who have an affiliation with our cause and we have volunteers who chose us simply because it looked like a fun place to be. Everyone has their own story and their own motivation for volunteering. What they get out of it will be different for everyone, whether it be enhancing their CV, confidence building or social interaction. What they all have in common is a real commitment to their shop and their team. I am so proud of the team and hope they are proud of their award. So truly, ‘hats off’ to Broughty Ferry, here’s to another fantastic year and an endless supply of chocolate biscuits!
